Professional Background
Dr. Sanjeev Saksena is Clinical Professor of Medicine at UMDNJ–Robert Wood Johnson School of Medicine and Medical Director of the Electrophysiology Research Foundation, a position he has held since 1982. He served as Director of the Cardiovascular Institute at Atlantic Health Systems (East) from 1999 to 2004 and as Director of the Arrhythmia & Pacemaker Service from 1989.
He was President of the North American Society of Pacing and Electrophysiology (NASPE), chaired its Government Relations Committee, and served on governmental affairs committees for the Heart Rhythm Society and the American College of Cardiology. He has extensive experience in administrative roles, including growing cardiology and cardiac surgery departments, restructuring NASPE into the Heart Rhythm Society, and developing collaborative initiatives with organizations such as the FDA, NHLBI, ESC, IHRS, ECAS, and Springer.
He is the original author of current CPT coding in Cardiac Pacing and Electrophysiology and has been actively involved in economic policy issues in cardiovascular medicine. He has directed cardiology and electrophysiology fellowship programs, supervised medical residents, and trained individuals who now supervise electrophysiology programs or serve as cardiology faculty across three continents.
Through the Electrophysiology Research Foundation, he sponsors educational programs for trainees and physicians in the USA, Europe, and Asia. He is co-Founder of the Indian Heart Rhythm Society and has participated in joint international programs in Asia, South America, and Europe.
Research & Publications
Since 1980, Dr. Saksena has been an active clinical and applied basic science investigator, holding grants from NHLBI, industry, and the American Heart Association. He has authored or co-authored over 350 abstracts, 330 articles, and 60 book chapters; edited or co-edited 6 journal supplements; and co-edited 5 books, including textbooks on Electrophysiological Disorders of the Heart and Interventional Cardiac Electrophysiology – A Multidisciplinary Approach.
He has served on Planning and Steering Committees for NIH trials such as AVID, AFFIRM, and TOPCAT, and was Study Chair for multicenter trials including ICE-CHIP, ICE-CRT HF, and T-Flex AF. He is Founding Editor and current Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Interventional Cardiac Electrophysiology.
